laire was excited. She knotted her hands in her lap to keep still, but her foot started tapping on the floor of the Jeep.

Streetlights cut in through the windshield periodically, illuminating Nox’s big hands on the steering wheel. She could see his face fairly well too, even though it was in the shadows. She didn’t used to be able to see so much in the darkness. Her eyes had changed.

Nox had said she would heal faster as well. Would she also live longer? Now that she was getting used to the idea of being a vampire, she wanted to know more about what it would mean. She’d never thought much about her future. She had never imagined it could be good. Now, she wondered.

Nox looked … nervous? She wasn’t sure. But when his gaze turned to her briefly, he smiled. Claire grinned.

They were going out. Out!

Even though she was still wearing the awful pink, at least she’d finally properly washed and conditioned her hair—though there had been a near-disaster when Nox had tried to put conditioner on the top. She’d even shaved, and her legs felt smooth and silky in her sweatpants.

Nox was wearing a black t-shirt and his black pants with all the pockets. The harness she’d seen before went around his legs, holding his weapons. Do they scare you? he’d asked.

When she’d said no, she was pretty sure he hadn’t believed her, but it was true. They didn’t scare her. She liked them. On him.

“Why is it called the Red District?” she asked.

That was their destination. A place with businesses owned by vampires, hidden by some kind of magic that Nox called shading.

“I don’t know. That’s just what people call it.”

“Because they kill people there?”

He looked startled. “No. We don’t kill people. Except demons, and they’re not people.”

“Movies always show vampires killing people.”

“Well … I won’t say it never happens, but we feed from each other. Like you feed from me.”

Claire sucked in a breath at the reminder. It still seemed strange to her, thinking about that. But it didn’t feel strange to do it. It felt … good.

“What about you?” she asked.

“What do you mean?”

“Don’t you need to … feed?” It sounded so animallike.

“I can go a long time without. You’ll be able to also, someday. Like how you haven’t been as hungry? You haven’t fed from me the last few times we’ve had sex.”

Claire blushed at the blunt word, but heat spilled into her lower belly despite that.

“But you have to sometime?” she asked. “Feed?”

“I can drink bottled blood.”

“What about … from me?” The idea was scary, but she didn’t like the thought of him drinking from a bottle instead of from her.

“Don’t worry about that.”

“But …”

“That’s for someday, sweetheart. One thing at a time.”

“But someday?”

“If you want.”

“All right then,” she said, appeased.

Nox turned the Jeep onto a street Claire had never been on. Portage was big, and Claire usually only took her same route from her apartment to the diner to the church where she was allowed to play the piano after the choir was done practicing.
